How to add content to this site, and make it viewable by others.

About

This page helps you get started with adding your own content and making it viewable by other users.  A few basics to remember are:

  • Only logged in users can add content. 
  • Every logged in user has their own personal folder to which they can add items. 
  • Logged in users can also add items to the main areas, which they think may be of interest to everyone.
  • All items submitted require authorization by a site manager.  They will be in a "Pending" state after you submit them, until they are approved for viewing by others.

 

Creating an Account

To create an account click the "New User" link below the login area on the left.

Fill in the requested information, and click OK.  After a short time (usually a few seconds, may take a couple minutes) you will receive an e-mail titled "User Account Information for Game Programming" sent by "Site Administrator" with the website administrators e-mail address as the source, and a link asking you to click to activate your account.  You must click the link in the e-mail to activate your account.

Once you click the link, you'll be taken to a page requesting you set your password.  ---Do not use the same password you use for your bank, email account, or any other secure site.---  This site does not currently use an SSL secure connection, so it is possible for others to steal your password here, so use one you made just for this site.  This is not intended to be a secure system.  Type in your password twice (the second time to make sure you didn't make any typos while entering it the first time). 

Now you can log in to your account.  Click on "Home" to go to the site homepage, fill in your login information on the left, and click OK to log in.

 

Adding Items to Your Folder

To go to your folder, log in, then click on "my folder" in the top right of your screen on every page.

Now you can add new items by clicking the "Add New..." menu, and selecting what type of item you'd like to add.

The items you'll probably want to use are:

  • Image  -  Images you can insert or link to from other pages.
  • File  -  Files others can download.
  • Page  -  A page like the others in the site, with formatting, text, images, and links.
  • Folder  -  A folder for grouping similar items.

You will then be taken to a page with a few tabs to create your page and assign it properties.  You can give it a category, mark it as related to other pages, make it not appear in the navigation portlet, and do things specific to the item type you're adding (e.g. uploading an image for an Image item).  Most of this should be straightforward.  Ask if something is not clear, and it may be added to this page.

 

Making Items in Your Folder Viewable by Others

Once you've added a page or folder, you must submit it for publication before it will be seen (this includes your "root" folder with your name on it).  So click the "state" menu, and select "submit for publication".  This submits it for review by a site manager, who will then either publish it, or send it back to you for correction if there is a problem with it.  When it is waiting for review, the state will say "pending".  It may take a day before your item is reviewed for publication.

Your root folder needs to be approved before the items inside it will be accessible to others.

Files and images within a published folder are automatically accessible.

 

Approving Content

If you are an instructor, or otherwise a good judge of acceptable content, and wish to approve content yourself, please contact the Site Administrator.
